Adelaide's Home of Natural and Cultural History

Founded in 1856, the South Australian Museum sits on North Terrace in the heart of Adelaide's cultural precinct, a few minutes' walk from Hume. It holds the world's largest collection of Australian Aboriginal cultural material, alongside natural history galleries covering everything from opalised fossils to polar exploration and the age of megafauna.

It's the kind of museum you can shape to however much time you've got. Duck in for twenty minutes to see the giant squid or the Ediacaran fossils, or lose a whole wet-weather afternoon working through the Egyptian Room, the Pacific Cultures gallery and the ever-popular Discovery Centre with the kids. Entry is free, so there's no pressure to make a day of it if you'd rather just pop in on your way past.
