One of Adelaide's Finest Buildings, Inside and Out

The Art Gallery of South Australia sits on North Terrace, right next door to the South Australian Museum, and is easily one of Adelaide's finest buildings before you've even stepped inside. It houses one of the country's most significant art collections, spanning Australian, European, Asian and North American works, with a particular strength in Indigenous art and the only dedicated Islamic gallery space in the country.

Entry to the permanent collection is always free, and the gallery is open every day of the year except Christmas, so it's an easy one to fit in whenever the mood strikes rather than something you need to plan around. Free guided tours run daily, or you can take your time wandering through at your own pace, whether that's a quick hour between other plans or a full afternoon working through the Elder Wing and beyond.

How far is the Art Gallery of South Australia from Hume Serviced Apartments?

Approximately 1.2km, roughly 15 minutes on foot along North Terrace.

Is the Art Gallery of South Australia free?

Yes, general entry is free. Major touring exhibitions are ticketed separately, so there's always something new to add on if you're keen.

Is it open on Mondays?

It sure is, seven days a week, so there's no wrong day to drop in.

What else is nearby?

Plenty. The South Australian Museum and the State Library of South Australia are both just a few minutes' stroll along North Terrace, so it's easy to turn one stop into a full afternoon of exploring.
